As part of CYSO’s equity initiatives, my work often focused on demystifying what was expected of young musicians. For students from backgrounds that are traditionally under-represented in classical music—students of color, girls, queer students, lower-income families—the ins and outs of milestones like auditioning can create barriers. This blog post broke down the process in detail, making explicit the unwritten rules and norms of the process to create a welcoming first touch point for new students and families.
